Council Overview

Strathfield Council (Council) is a medium sized Council located in Sydney’s Inner West. The area of the Council comprises approximately 14 square kilometres and has an estimated population of 46,000 residents, which is growing at 2.5-3% annually. Based on NSW Government projections, the population will increase to over 80,000 by 2036.

About the Role

Strathfield Council is seeking a Chief Financial Officer to join our finance team on a full time, permanent basis.

We are seeking a Chief Financial Officer to plan, lead and manage the Finance team of Council ensuring compliance with legislation and industry standards, executive management expectations of performance and deliverables. Contribute to the achievement of Council’s vision and corporate goals by supporting the development and implementation of key financial strategies, operational plans, financial policy and procedures and financial systems.

As Chief Financial Officer you will develop estimates of income and expenditure in accordance with Integrated Planning and Reporting requirements and Council’s adopted 2040 Community Strategic Plan as well as actively supporting the Executive Team and Council meetings.

The Chief Financial Officer will also provide support and advice to the Director, Corporate and Community Services in relation to the financial goals of the organisation and other special projects as required.

About You

The successful candidate will have the following:


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field with a membership to a professional body (e.g. CPA, ACCA, CA) or similar professional certification.
  • Extensive practical experience with a successful track record in strategic financial management.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare long term financial budgets and to undertake the preparation of trending/forecasting models and reports associated with Council's community strategic planning process including long term financial planning, asset management and workforce planning modelling.
  • Demonstrated successful experience in preparing financial statements, including balance sheets, operating statements and statutory reports for a multi-disciplined Council.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in Financial Asset management including revaluation, reporting and accounting treatment of council assets.
  • Demonstrated ability to critically examine financial management systems and identify efficiency improvements, manage projects and implement significant change.
  • Advanced computer skills in a range of applications.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, persuade and influence.
  • Highly developed executive report and policy writing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and to build trust and credibility with all stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical/problem solving skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple complex projects.
