Salary Range:

  • Base Salary: From $101,738.00 - $111,930.00 (Grade 16, Step 1 to 4) per annum
  • Plus: 12% superannuation
  • Total Package: $113,946.56 - $125,361.60 per annum dependent upon competency step appointment.

The successful candidate will have access to step increases for the grade based on competency assessment and tenure within this position.

The Opportunity

Strathfield Council is seeking a motivated Tree Management Officer to join our Urban Forest Team.

You will assess tree applications and Development Applications, provide arboriculture advice, and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and Council policies. The role supports sustainable development by balancing growth with protection of Strathfield’s urban tree canopy.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Assessing tree removal, pruning, and protection applications
  • Reviewing Development Applications involving trees
  • Providing arboriculture advice for planning and construction
  • Conducting site inspections on public and private land
  • Investigating unauthorised tree works and compliance issues
  • Preparing reports and documentation for decision-making
  • Liaising with residents, developers, and Council staff
  • Responding to enquiries and complaints about trees
  • Supporting urban forest policies and strategic planning
  • Promoting tree protection and canopy awareness
  • Ensuring compliance with legislation and Council standards

Essential Requirements

  • Diploma of Arboriculture (AQF5) or other related field of study
  • Experience in the assessment of trees, and resolution of complex arboriculture issues associated with urban tree management and development applications, preferably in local government
  • Good understanding and knowledge of the relevant regulations such as the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, Australian Standard for Protection of trees on development sites AS4970
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and the ability to deal with a diverse range of customers in a professional manner
  • Proven ability to work effectively as an individual or in a team environment
  • Demonstrated computer literacy in a wide range of computer software packages including Microsoft Office, Electronic Records Management etc.
  • Current NSW ‘Class C’ Driver Licence
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Urban Forestry principles

Desirable

  • Qualifications in recognised Tree Risk Assessment methods such as TRAQ and/or QTRA
  • Knowledge and experience in landscape and design processes
  • Understanding of civil and stormwater engineering constraints and opportunities
  • Good plant identification knowledge
