Senior Manager Governance and Risk – Inner West Council

Inner West Council is seeking an experienced and values-driven Senior Manager Governance and Risk to lead the service unit and play a critical role in strengthening probity, compliance, transparency and organisational resilience.
This is a senior leadership opportunity for a strategic leader who brings sound judgment, exceptional communication skills and the ability to navigate sensitive and high‑risk matters with professionalism and integrity. You are confident in advising senior executives and elected officials on complex governance issues, and are passionate about public value, ethical decision‑making and excellent customer outcomes.
In this pivotal leadership role, you will:
- Lead and continuously improve Council’s governance and risk frameworks, policies, systems and practices, ensuring compliance and organisational resilience.
- Provide trusted, high‑level governance and risk advice to the Executive, Mayor and Councillors, and senior stakeholders.
- Oversee core functions including governance and compliance, enterprise risk, business continuity, internal audit, ARIC support, GIPA/privacy and WHS.
- Build and sustain a high‑performance, customer‑focused culture while managing service performance, budgets and resources.
- Represent Council at high‑level meetings and drive digital and system improvements to enhance transparency, reporting and service delivery.
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in law, management, public policy or a related discipline, or equivalent senior leadership background, with proven experience in a regulated government or large organisational environment.
- Strong policy development and analytical capability, with sound understanding of governance frameworks, risk management, compliance and public sector accountability
- Proven ability to lead and develop high‑performing, customer‑focused teams and drive continuous improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with Councillors (or equivalent), executives, senior leaders and external stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including facilitation, presentation, negotiation and conflict resolution at senior levels.
- High standards of ethics and professionalism, with the ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and improve organisational systems and controls.
