The Opportunity

Be at the centre of shaping how people move around Wollongong. As Transport Planning Coordinator, you'll lead a small team of specialists and play a key role in setting the strategic direction for transport planning across the LGA.

You'll manage a team of approximately 4 transport professionals, working closely with senior leaders, planners, engineers, internal referral partners, state agencies, consultants and the community. Your team will manage mode‑based strategies, movement and place outcomes, and long‑term transport planning decisions that support a growing, connected city.

This is a role for someone who enjoys combining technical expertise with people leadership. You'll be trusted to operate independently, guide experienced professionals, and manage a program of strategic work while being supported by an experienced leadership team. This is a permanent, full‑time position, 35 hours per week. Salary from $125,236.03 up to $138,992.64 plus superannuation. (Salary package will be assessed based on skills, experience and qualifications) A current Class C Driver Licence is required for site visits across the LGA.

A minimum increase of 3.25% to the salary from 1 July 2026 in accordance with Council's Enterprise Agreement.

How you'll make a

  • Lead and coordinate the Transport Planning team, setting priorities and supporting performance and capability
  • Manage and deliver a program of strategic transport planning work aligned to Council objectives
  • Provide expert advice on transport planning, sustainable mode shift, and place‑based outcomes
  • Develop and oversee transport strategies, plans, policies and investigations
  • Work as a key internal referral point for development, infrastructure and planning matters
  • Engage with state agencies, consultants, industry peers and community stakeholders
  • Oversee budgets, funding opportunities and reporting requirements
  • Communicate complex transport concepts clearly through reports, presentations and briefings
  • Ensure strong governance, safety and compliance across transport planning activities

About you

You are an experienced transport planning professional with the credibility to lead people and programs from day one. You bring strong technical knowledge, critical and strategic thinking, and a collaborative leadership style, enabling you to influence a wide range of technical stakeholders and drive practical, innovative transport planning solutions.

You're comfortable leading experienced professionals, setting direction, managing competing priorities and working across complex stakeholder environments. You value collaboration and, accountability and you lead in a way that builds trust and confidence.

You will bring:

  • A degree qualification in Transport Planning, Transport Engineering, Urban Planning, Urban Design or a related discipline
  • Extensive experience in transport planning, including strategic transport planning and policy development
  • Experience leading and managing a small professional team
  • Experience managing a program of work from idea into implementation
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills across technical, executive and community audiences
  • A commitment to safety, governance, and professional integrity
  • A commitment to Council's values of Respect, Integrity, OneTeam, Sustainability and Courage
  • A current Class C Driver Licence
