Join our team as a Mechanical Engineering Tradesperson - Fitter Machinist, where you’ll play a key role in keeping vital community infrastructure operating safely, reliably, and sustainably around the clock. From water and wastewater systems to recreational facilities, your expertise will help maintain the essential services our community depends on every day.

About the role:

  • Deliver specialised mechanical installation, maintenance, upgrades, repairs, diagnostics, and calibration across Council’s extensive water and wastewater infrastructure, including pumping systems, fixed plant, and high‑risk mechanical assets.
  • Support the reliability and environmental compliance of critical community services by maintaining geographically dispersed infrastructure such as dams, treatment plants, pump stations, reservoirs, and network‑wide mechanical systems.
  • Provide versatile mechanical and technical services to a range of Council departments - including Environment and Health, Recreational Services, and Business Undertakings - covering assets such as swimming pools, fountains, pressure systems, and marine wastewater facilities.
  • Apply advanced mechanical expertise in diagnostics, fabrication, repair, and commissioning of complex, high‑pressure systems while ensuring strict adherence to safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements, often in hazardous or confined environments.
  • Participate in the 24-hour on‑call roster (one week in five) to respond rapidly to mechanical failures, while also supervising apprentices and contractors, coordinating work teams, and ensuring timely procurement and communication to support continuous service delivery.

We are seeking:

  • A qualified Mechanical Engineering Tradesperson with a Trade Certificate in Fitting and Machining (or related Mechanical discipline) and strong capability across varied mechanical systems and processes.
  • Someone able to meet 24‑hour on‑call emergency response requirements, including availability after hours and the ability to respond within Council’s specified timeframes.
  • A candidate with strong literacy and numeracy skills to interpret technical documentation and accurately complete work records, reports, and maintenance documentation.
  • An individual demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of workplace health and safety, with proven experience working safely in confined spaces, unhygienic environments, and other high‑risk settings.
  • A team member with strong supervisory ability, able to work independently, plan and assess work tasks effectively, and provide direction to assistants, apprentices, or contractors.
  • Someone with strong communication and problem‑solving skills, a valid Class C driver’s licence, and the motivation to continue developing technical skills across a broad range of Council equipment and processes.

This position is based in Chinderah and can be directed to work from any Council work site.
