The West Arnhem Regional Council is seeking a Chief Executive Officer to lead and guide its operations during an exciting period of growth and development, contributing to the Council’s vision of building stronger communities.

This role is based in one of the most unique and culturally rich and environmentally significant regions in the Northern Territory, encompassing over 50,000 square kilometres. The Council oversees a remarkable area that includes five remote communities with landscapes ranging from ocean coastlines and floodplains to escarpments and Kakadu National Park. While each community is incredibly unique, language, culture and ceremony are strong, and clan groups are connected through cultural song lines across the entire Arnhem region.

As the largest employer in the region, West Arnhem Regional Council provides a wide range of core local government, community wellbeing and commercial services to residents of West Arnhem Land. Council also collaborates with government agencies through shared service agreements.

As CEO, you will lead a dynamic team, providing visionary leadership and a commitment to achieving community-focused outcomes. A key responsibility will be managing the Council’s strategic and operational plans while fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment. You will also play a central role in promoting community development, supporting cultural preservation, and creating strong economic and employment opportunities.

Working closely with the Mayor and Elected Members, you will ensure that the Council delivers high-quality services and fulfills its obligations to the communities it serves.

The role offers a base location of either Darwin or Jabiru, attractive working conditions, including six weeks of annual leave, a 12.5% superannuation contribution, unrestricted private use of a motor vehicle, Council-provided housing (if based in Jabiru), and relocation expenses.

“In accordance with section 166 of the Local Government Act 2019 (the Act), Regulation 109(1)(b) of the Local Government (General) Regulations 2001 (the Regulations) and Ministerial Guideline 2 – Appointing a CEO (Guideline 2).Section 166(1) of the Act states the following:
1) A person is not eligible to be the CEO or the Deputy CEO if:
a) the person is disqualified from managing a corporation under the Corporations Act 2001 or the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (Cth); or
b) the person is disqualified under section 40 of the Associations Act 2003; or
c) the person is bankrupt.”
