Council Overview

Strathfield Council is a medium sized Council located in Sydney’s Inner West. The area of the Council comprises approximately 14 square kilometres and has an estimated population of 46,000 residents, which is growing at 2.5-3% annually. Based on NSW Government projections, the population will increase to over 80,000 by 2036.

About the Role

Strathfield Council is seeking a Senior Financial Accountant to join our finance team on a full time, permanent basis.

The Senior Financial Accountant plays a crucial role in the organisation by overseeing the financial accounting and reporting function as well as transactional services. This includes ensuring that all financial information is accurate, reliable, and compliant with relevant accounting standards and relevant laws and regulations. In addition to managing the financial accounting aspects, the Senior Financial Accountant also plays a key role in supporting the other core finance functions in ensuring statutory compliance activities and business obligations relating to the finance function are met.

About You

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (essential), with a membership to a professional body (e.g. CPA, ACCA, CA) or similar professional certification (desirable).
  • Extensive experience in financial accounting, with a proven track record of accuracy, reliability, problem-solving, and business improvement, with demonstrated experience in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting standards, principles, regulations, and best practices, with the ability to interpret and apply complex accounting standards to business transactions and contractual arrangements.
  • High proficiency in financial software and Microsoft Excel, with the ability to manipulate and analyse large datasets, with strong analytical skills, ability to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve complex accounting issues.
  • Demonstrated innovation and a commitment to automation, with experience in implementing process improvements and leveraging technology to streamline financial processes.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work, even under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a flexible and adaptable approach to changing priorities.
  • Extensive experience supporting financial operations and undertaking transactional work such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, banking and receipting, refund processing, and other transactional tasks. 
  • Solid experience supporting other core finance functions, including business partnering, budgeting and forecasting, and financial planning, is highly desirable.
  • Strong negotiation skills, with the ability to influence and gain buy-in from key stakeholders across the organisation to implement process improvements.
